Building Stronger Connections Through Community, Relationships, and Integrity

The Grow & Connect Networking Breakfast, presented by The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce, is designed to create something that can sometimes be lost in traditional business networking: the opportunity to genuinely get to know the people in the room.

We believe successful networking begins long before a business transaction takes place. It begins when people have meaningful conversations, learn about one another, share experiences and knowledge, discover common interests, and establish trust. Business opportunities may eventually develop from those relationships, but they should not have to be forced.

That philosophy reflects the values found throughout our Mission & Vision, our President's Message, and our Code of Professional Conduct. It can be summarized by the principles that guide our Chamber: community comes first, relationships come second, business follows when a genuine need arises, and integrity must be present throughout the entire process.

The Grow & Connect Networking Breakfast provides a welcoming environment where business owners, professionals, entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, community leaders, and others can begin building those relationships while becoming more connected to Franklin Lakes and the surrounding business community.

  1. A Different Approach to Business Networking

Traditional networking can sometimes become focused almost entirely on numbers. Participants may measure success by how many business cards they distribute, how many contacts they collect, or how many potential customers they identify before leaving the room.

The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce takes a different approach. We believe the quality of the relationships you begin developing is considerably more important than the quantity of contacts you accumulate during a single event.

If you leave Grow & Connect having had several meaningful conversations with people you genuinely want to speak with again, the morning has accomplished something worthwhile. You do not need to meet every person in attendance, and you certainly do not need to sell something to everyone you meet.

One genuine professional relationship can ultimately become more valuable than dozens of business cards collected from people you barely remember. Our Why Join Our Chamber page explains this philosophy in greater depth and describes why we place community and relationships ahead of transactions.

Grow & Connect is where those principles can become actual conversations and relationships.

  1. What Is the Grow & Connect Networking Breakfast?

The Grow & Connect Networking Breakfast is a recurring networking experience presented by The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce. It provides an opportunity for people from diverse businesses, professions, organizations, and areas of the community to meet in an environment centered on conversation, relationship-building, education, and professional integrity.

Our objective is not simply to fill a room with as many people as possible. We want to create an environment where worthwhile conversations can happen, where attendees have an opportunity to meet people they might not otherwise encounter in the normal course of their business day.

The room may include established business owners, independent professionals, entrepreneurs, representatives of larger organizations, nonprofit leaders, community representatives, and experts from many fields. Some participants may have lived or worked in the area for decades, while others may be attending their first Chamber event.

Both belong in the conversation.

If you are unfamiliar with our organization, About the Chamber provides additional information about The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce, our values, and the organization we are continuing to build.

  1. Community Comes First

The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and our commitment extends beyond traditional business networking. We believe businesses and professionals are part of the larger communities in which they operate, and those relationships create opportunities to contribute in meaningful ways.

A strong business community should be interested not only in what it can receive from the surrounding community, but also in what it can contribute. That contribution may involve financial support, volunteering, professional expertise, donated resources, increased awareness, or simply connecting an organization with someone who can help.

Our developing Supporting Our Community initiatives reflect this commitment and will continue to expand as the Chamber grows. Grow & Connect offers another opportunity for people who care about Franklin Lakes and the surrounding community to meet one another, exchange ideas, and discover ways they can contribute.

Community comes first because we believe successful organizations are built within successful communities. Businesses, residents, nonprofit organizations, professionals, local institutions, volunteers, and community leaders are all part of an interconnected environment. When those relationships become stronger, everyone has an opportunity to benefit.

  1. Relationships Come Second

Relationships require more than introductions. Trust develops through conversation, shared experiences, reliability, knowledge, professionalism, and the way people consistently treat one another over time.

Grow & Connect provides an environment where those relationships can begin without requiring an immediate business objective. Rather than immediately determining whether someone could become a customer, take the opportunity to learn something about them.

Ask about their business or profession, how they became involved in their field, what brought them to the breakfast, what they are currently working on, or what challenges they are seeing within their industry. Listen to their answers and allow the conversation to develop naturally.

You may discover an immediate professional connection, or you may find that you share an interest that has absolutely nothing to do with business. Either outcome can create the beginning of a worthwhile relationship because relationships ultimately develop between people, not companies, logos, or business cards.

Our President's Message provides additional perspective on the welcoming, community-focused culture we want to continue developing throughout The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce.

  1. Business Follows When the Need Arises

The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce absolutely wants its members to prosper. We want businesses to grow, professionals to make connections, referrals to develop, collaborations to emerge, and people to discover businesses that can help them.

The distinction is that we do not believe those outcomes need to be forced during the first conversation.

Consider meeting an accountant, technology professional, attorney, insurance professional, financial advisor, contractor, healthcare provider, marketing specialist, real estate professional, consultant, or another business owner at Grow & Connect when you have no immediate need for that person's services. There may be no reason to discuss a transaction that morning, but there may still be every reason to begin a professional relationship.

Months later, circumstances can change. Your business may expand, a problem may arise, a project may begin, or someone you know may ask for a recommendation. Instead of searching for a stranger, you may remember the professional you met through The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce.

If you have continued seeing that person at Chamber activities, your familiarity may be even greater. You know something about who they are, what they do, and how they conduct themselves.

That is relationship-based business development. The need does not have to exist when the relationship begins.

  1. Integrity Must Be Present Throughout the Process

Integrity is not simply the fourth item in a sequence. It is the principle that must govern community involvement, relationship building, professional networking, and business.

Our Code of Professional Conduct establishes expectations regarding how members and guests should interact within the Chamber environment. We expect professional behavior, respectful communication, honesty, appropriate boundaries, nondiscrimination, and conduct that reflects positively upon the individual and the Chamber community.

We want people attending Grow & Connect to feel comfortable having conversations without immediately becoming targets for aggressive sales activity. We also want members to understand that access to another person's business card or contact information does not create unlimited permission for persistent solicitation.

The reputation of a Chamber is shaped by the conduct of the people associated with it. We therefore care not only about creating opportunities, but also about how those opportunities are pursued.

  1. We Educate Rather Than Sell

One of the principles we encourage throughout Grow & Connect is education rather than pressure.

When someone asks what you do, explain it. Share your expertise, describe the problems you help solve, answer questions about your industry, and provide information that may be useful to the other person.

Then allow that person to decide whether they want to learn more.

There is an important difference between educating someone and immediately attempting to sell to them. Education demonstrates expertise while respecting the other person's ability to make an informed decision. Aggressive selling can create pressure before sufficient interest, trust, or need exists.

A knowledgeable professional does not need to convert every conversation into an appointment. Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is answer a question, share something useful, and expect nothing in return.

People remember professionals who helped them understand something, and that memory may become important when a genuine need eventually develops.

  1. Bring Your Business Cards, but Begin With a Conversation

Business cards remain a useful part of professional networking, and we encourage attendees to bring them. What we discourage is treating the event as a competition to see who can distribute the greatest number.

A business card becomes more meaningful when a conversation accompanies it.

Introduce yourself and get to know the other person first. If the conversation develops and you would like to remain connected, ask whether they would like to exchange business cards or contact information.

This small act of courtesy makes the exchange mutual. Both people have chosen to remain connected, and when they look at the card later, they can have a conversation and find a person associated with the name.

Our Code of Professional Conduct provides additional guidance regarding the professional networking environment we seek to maintain at Chamber activities.

  1. You Do Not Need to Meet Everyone in the Room

Success at a networking breakfast should not be measured exclusively by the number of people you meet.

If you have several meaningful conversations, you have used the morning well. If you meet one person who eventually becomes an important professional relationship, the morning may prove extraordinarily valuable. If you learn something that helps your organization, introduce two people who should know one another, or discover a community organization you want to support, you have also accomplished something worthwhile.

Networking becomes much more useful when we stop treating every interaction as a numerical exercise.

We want attendees to have enough time actually to listen to one another. Ten superficial introductions are not automatically more valuable than three substantial conversations.

Quality matters.

  1. Who Should Attend Grow & Connect?

Grow & Connect is designed for people who value genuine professional and community relationships. Attendees may include business owners, entrepreneurs, executives, independent professionals, managers, nonprofit leaders, community leaders, representatives of larger organizations, and others interested in becoming more connected with Franklin Lakes and its surrounding business community.

You do not need to arrive with a rehearsed sales presentation, nor do you need to know anyone before walking into the room. You need to be prepared to introduce yourself, participate in conversations, listen to other people, and approach the morning with professional curiosity.

Specific eligibility, registration requirements, pricing, location information, and other details may vary by event. Attendees should always review the individual event registration information before attending.

  1. Your First Grow & Connect Breakfast

Walking into a networking event for the first time can feel unfamiliar, particularly when you do not recognize anyone in the room. There is no need to make the experience complicated.

Begin with one conversation.

Introduce yourself to someone and ask about them. If you see another person standing alone, invite them into the conversation. They may also be attending for the first time and appreciate the introduction.

Established Chamber members and regular participants can significantly enhance the quality of Grow & Connect by welcoming newcomers rather than remaining exclusively within familiar groups. Introducing a new attendee to several people can immediately change that person's experience of the event.

A successful networking environment is not created solely by the organization hosting it. It is created collectively by people who make an effort to include one another.

  1. Coffee, Tea, Juice, and a Welcoming Start

For Grow & Connect, coffee, tea, and juice are ready at 6:30 AM, allowing attendees to arrive, settle in, get a drink, and begin conversations before the formal portion of the morning begins.

That informal period is an important part of the experience because some of the best conversations at networking events happen before or after the structured program.

When available, additional breakfast items or refreshments may be provided through Chamber arrangements, sponsors, or other event support. Food, refreshments, locations, schedules, and other details may vary by event, so attendees should consult the registration information for the specific breakfast they plan to attend.

We want the environment to feel welcoming from the moment someone arrives. The coffee, tea, and juice help create that atmosphere, but the people and conversations are what ultimately make the morning worthwhile.

  1. Why We Meet in the Morning

Morning networking offers professionals an opportunity to invest in relationships before the normal business day becomes demanding.

For many people, an early event makes it possible to meet other professionals, exchange ideas, and develop connections without sacrificing the middle of the workday. It can also create a different atmosphere from that of an evening networking event, as participants begin their day with conversation, curiosity, and new connections.

The purpose is not simply to schedule networking earlier. It is to create a consistent opportunity for people to make relationship-building part of their professional routine.

Over time, seeing some of the same people at recurring events also creates familiarity. A person you briefly meet during one breakfast may become someone you know considerably better after several months of conversations.

That continuity is where networking can become relationship building.

  1. Bring Curiosity With You

One of the most valuable things you can bring to Grow & Connect is genuine curiosity about the other people attending.

Instead of entering the room primarily asking yourself who might purchase from you, consider asking who you might learn from.

Every person has knowledge and experience you do not possess. Someone may understand an industry you have never encountered. Another person may have solved a business challenge similar to one you are facing. Someone may know an organization or resource that could be useful to you, while another attendee may offer a perspective you had never considered.

Curiosity changes the nature of networking by encouraging listening rather than pitching. It also makes conversations more interesting for everyone involved.

People generally know when someone is genuinely interested in what they have to say.

  1. Make Introductions Whenever You Can

One of the most valuable contributions you can make during Grow & Connect costs nothing: introduce two people who should know one another.

If someone tells you about their business, profession, organization, or a challenge they are experiencing, and another person comes to mind, make the introduction when appropriate.

There does not need to be an immediate business opportunity attached to the introduction. You are simply giving two people an opportunity to have a conversation that might otherwise never occur.

A strong Chamber culture develops when participants begin thinking beyond what they personally hope to gain from the room and consider how they can help other people become connected.

That is one of the ways community and relationships reinforce each other.

  1. Follow Up Professionally

A meaningful networking experience does not necessarily end when the breakfast concludes.

If you met someone and genuinely enjoyed the conversation, follow up. Remind them where you met, reference something you discussed, and let them know you enjoyed speaking with them. If there is a legitimate reason to continue the conversation, suggest an appropriate next step.

What is unnecessary is automatically adding every person you meet to an aggressive sales campaign or repeatedly contacting someone simply because you exchanged business cards.

Professional follow-up should reflect the same respect and integrity demonstrated during the original conversation.

A short, genuine message following a meaningful conversation can accomplish considerably more than a generic sales email sent to everyone in the room.

  1. Become More Connected to Franklin Lakes

Grow & Connect provides an opportunity to become more familiar with the businesses, professionals, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and resources associated with Franklin Lakes and the surrounding area.

Local business communities become stronger when people know who is around them.

You may discover a business you never knew existed, meet a professional whose expertise becomes useful later, learn about a nonprofit organization doing meaningful work, or discover another Chamber activity that interests you.

Networking becomes more valuable when it connects people not only with potential customers, but also with the broader community.

This connection between business and community is an important part of our Mission & Vision and the long-term direction of The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce.

  1. Grow & Connect and Our Mission

An organization's mission should not simply exist as words on a website. People should be able to experience it through the organization's actions.

Grow & Connect is one way we put our Mission & Vision into practice.

Community is represented by bringing together people who care about Franklin Lakes and the surrounding area. Relationships develop through conversations and repeated interactions. Business opportunities may emerge naturally as people become familiar with one another and genuine needs develop. Integrity establishes the standard by which all interactions should occur.

When these principles work together, networking becomes more than an exchange of contact information. It becomes part of building a stronger professional and community network.

We want people to join because they understand our philosophy and believe it represents the kind of organization they want to be part of.

Membership should be the beginning of greater involvement rather than simply the purchase of a listing.

  1. A Chamber That Continues to Grow

The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce is continuing to grow and develop, and Grow & Connect is part of that evolution.

Our new website provides a foundation for additional resources, features, community initiatives, events, member benefits, and opportunities to be introduced.

We will continue listening to members and attendees, evaluating what works, learning from each event, and improving the experience over time.

Our goal is not to create a networking breakfast merely because a Chamber is expected to hold networking events. We want to create a gathering that people genuinely find valuable and look forward to attending.

That means maintaining a welcoming atmosphere, protecting the relationship-focused culture, and continuing to prioritize quality over quantity.

  1. Frequently Asked Questions About Grow & Connect

What is the Grow & Connect Networking Breakfast?

The Grow & Connect Networking Breakfast is a relationship-focused morning networking event presented by The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce. It brings together business owners, professionals, entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, community leaders, and others interested in developing meaningful professional and community relationships.

What makes Grow & Connect different from traditional networking?

Our approach is built around community, relationships, education, and integrity rather than aggressive selling. We want attendees to have meaningful conversations and develop relationships that can continue beyond a single event. Business may eventually result from those relationships when genuine needs arise, but an immediate transaction is not the measure of a successful conversation.

What time are refreshments available?

Coffee, tea, and juice are ready at 6:30 AM for Grow & Connect. Individual event schedules, locations, refreshments, and program details should always be confirmed through the applicable registration information.

Should I bring business cards?

Yes. Business cards are welcome and encouraged, but we ask attendees to build some rapport before exchanging them. A card connected to a genuine conversation is considerably more valuable than one distributed without context.

Do I need to prepare a sales pitch?

No. You should certainly be prepared to explain what you do, but we encourage attendees to educate rather than pressure people to purchase. Share your knowledge, answer questions, and let the other person decide whether to continue the conversation.

What if I do not know anyone?

You are still welcome to participate, subject to the applicable event registration requirements. Introduce yourself to someone, begin a conversation, and let the morning unfold from there. We also encourage established participants to welcome people they have not met before.

Does attending guarantee new customers or referrals?

No. The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce does not guarantee leads, referrals, customers, or business resulting from attendance. We create opportunities for people to meet and develop relationships. What ultimately develops from those relationships depends upon the people involved, the trust they establish, and whether genuine needs arise.

Can nonprofit and community organizations participate?

Participation requirements may vary by event, but nonprofit and community leaders can be an important part of the relationships we seek to develop because Grow & Connect is about community as well as business.

Will photographs or video be taken?

Photography or video may occur during Chamber events. Please review our Privacy Policy and applicable event registration terms for additional information. Individuals who do not wish to be photographed or recorded should notify the Chamber so that reasonable efforts can be made to accommodate their request.

  1. Preparing for Your Next Grow & Connect Breakfast

You do not need an elaborate networking strategy to prepare for Grow & Connect. Bring your business cards, understand how to explain what you do in a clear and useful way, and arrive prepared to listen as much as you speak.

Approach people with curiosity rather than an immediate sales objective. Introduce yourself to someone new, look for opportunities to make useful introductions, respect professional boundaries, and remember that the value of the morning should not be determined solely by whether you leave with immediate business.

The objective is to begin and strengthen relationships.

When breakfast concludes, reflect on the people you met and consider which conversations are genuinely worth continuing. A thoughtful follow-up with several people you actually connected with is more consistent with our philosophy than contacting everyone simply because they attended the same event.

Grow Your Relationships. Connect With Your Community.

The Grow & Connect Networking Breakfast represents the kind of professional networking environment we want to create through The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce.

We want people to feel welcome when they arrive, to meet individuals they might not otherwise encounter, to share knowledge, to discover resources, to make introductions, and to leave having established relationships worth continuing.

We want business owners and professionals to become more connected to Franklin Lakes and to one another. We want nonprofit and community organizations to have opportunities to meet people who care about the community. We want experienced members to welcome new participants, and for new participants to feel they can become part of the conversation.

Most importantly, we want people to understand that professional networking does not have to begin with a transaction.

It can begin with a cup of coffee and a genuine conversation.

Over time, conversations create familiarity, familiarity can create trust, and trust can create opportunities when genuine needs arise.

That is the environment we are working to build.
