Every community has a history, but history is about considerably more than dates, buildings, documents, and photographs. It also lives in the memories of the people who have called a community home, raised their families there, built businesses, attended local schools, volunteered, participated in community organizations, watched neighborhoods evolve, and contributed in countless ways to making that community what it is today.
The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce created Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories to provide a welcoming opportunity for people to come together, share those stories, learn from one another, and help keep the history and memories of Franklin Lakes alive. The program reflects the community centered philosophy described throughout About The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce and our Mission & Vision, where bringing people together and strengthening meaningful relationships are fundamental parts of who we are.
Histories & Memories is not intended to be a formal history lecture or a classroom experience. It is a community gathering built around conversation, curiosity, personal experiences, photographs, memories, questions, and the stories that emerge when people have an opportunity to sit together and talk about the community they share.
Our first Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories gathering has already taken place, and the experience reinforced something we strongly believe: people are interested in learning more about the community around them, and almost everyone has a story, memory, photograph, question, or piece of local knowledge that can add something meaningful to the conversation.
Why Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories Matters
History helps us understand how a community became what it is today, but some of the most interesting parts of local history may never appear in a textbook or formal historical record. They are remembered by the people who experienced them, heard the stories from previous generations, worked in local businesses, attended community events, watched neighborhoods develop, or simply remember Franklin Lakes at a different point in time.
Someone may remember what a particular road looked like decades ago, while another person may remember a business that once occupied a familiar location. A longtime resident may remember a local tradition that newer residents have never heard about, and someone else may have photographs that show a recognizable part of Franklin Lakes before homes, roads, landscaping, or other development changed its appearance.
When those memories are shared, they can create connections between generations and between longtime and newer residents. They can also inspire questions that lead people to discover more about Franklin Lakes and encourage conversations that might never have occurred otherwise.
We believe preserving the story of a community begins by creating opportunities for people to tell it, which is one of the many ways we put the principles described in our President's Message into practice.
Our First Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories Gathering
The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce held its first Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories Gathering at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, bringing together members of the community for an evening centered on local history, conversation, learning, and shared experiences.
The gathering included participation from the Mayor, our town historian, and others from the community. Rather than building the evening around a single formal presentation, the gathering created an environment where different perspectives, memories, questions, and pieces of local knowledge could naturally become part of the conversation.
Those who attended had opportunities to learn something they did not previously know about Franklin Lakes while also enjoying the experience of spending time with other people interested in the community. Conversations moved naturally from one subject to another, demonstrating exactly why a program built around memories can reveal details that might never surface during a traditional presentation.
The success of our first gathering gave us a strong reason to continue developing Histories & Memories as an ongoing community program rather than treating it as a single event.
A Conversation Rather Than a Lecture
Formal historical presentations have an important place, but Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories is designed to create a different type of experience. We want people to have the opportunity to participate in conversations where one photograph, question, location, business name, road, building, or personal recollection can lead naturally into another part of Franklin Lakes history.
A photograph of a familiar building might cause someone to remember the business that once occupied it. Another person may remember the family associated with that business, while someone else recalls what the surrounding area looked like at the time. Before long, one photograph has created a conversation involving several people and several pieces of community history.
That is exactly the type of interaction we want Histories & Memories to encourage.
Nobody needs to arrive as a historian or local expert. Someone who has lived in Franklin Lakes for decades may possess valuable firsthand memories, while someone who moved here much more recently may bring questions and curiosity that lead to conversations longtime residents would never have thought to begin themselves.
The objective is not to determine who knows the most about Franklin Lakes. The objective is to give people an opportunity to learn from one another.
Longtime Residents and Newer Residents Belong in the Conversation
You do not need to have lived in Franklin Lakes for fifty years to participate in Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories. The program is designed to welcome people with different connections to the community because each perspective can contribute something different.
Longtime residents provide an invaluable connection to earlier periods in Franklin Lakes history, and their firsthand memories can help others understand how particular neighborhoods, roads, businesses, institutions, and traditions have changed over time. Newer residents, meanwhile, have an opportunity to learn about the place they now call home and may ask questions that encourage longtime residents to recall stories or details they have not considered in many years.
Someone may have roots in Franklin Lakes extending across generations, while another person may have arrived only recently. Histories & Memories gives them an opportunity to sit together, discover what they share, and develop a stronger connection with the community.
That emphasis on genuine connection reflects the relationship philosophy behind Why Join Our Chamber, even though participation in Histories & Memories does not require Chamber membership.
Bring Your Memories, Questions, Photographs, and Curiosity
Attending Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories does not require preparing a presentation or arriving with extensive knowledge about local history. Some people may have a story they want to share, while others may have a question about a particular location, building, road, neighborhood, business, family, event, or tradition.
Others may simply want to listen.
You may have an old photograph and wonder if someone recognizes the people or location depicted in it. You may remember a former business and want to know whether anyone else remembers it. Perhaps you have heard a story about Franklin Lakes for years but have never known whether someone else could provide additional information.
You may even arrive believing you have nothing to contribute and discover that someone else's story reminds you of something you had not thought about in years.
That is part of what makes a conversational program like Histories & Memories so valuable. One person's question can become another person's memory, and one person's memory can become the beginning of an entirely new conversation.

Old photographs can be extraordinary conversation starters because they allow people to see familiar places from an unfamiliar point in time. A photograph of a road, building, business, school, landscape, community gathering, or neighborhood can immediately lead to questions about what has changed, what has disappeared, and what has remained recognizable.
Someone may identify a person in a photograph, while another attendee recognizes the building behind them. Someone else may remember what occupied the property before or after the photograph was taken, and another participant may know something about the surrounding neighborhood.
Future Histories & Memories gatherings may provide opportunities for people to share appropriate photographs and other materials connected with Franklin Lakes history. Anyone bringing an original or personally valuable item should retain possession of it unless another arrangement has specifically been made, since the purpose of the gathering is to encourage people to share and discuss community history rather than collect personal property.

Our philosophy begins with Community First because businesses and professionals exist within a larger community. Help Us Choose the Best Time for Our Next Gathering
Our first Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories gathering was held on a weeknight. As we begin considering the next gathering, we want the people who are genuinely interested in attending to help us determine when future gatherings should take place.
We are currently considering a weeknight evening, such as Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, or a Sunday afternoon.
Rather than asking which option merely sounds preferable, we want to know which one would make you more likely to actually attend. Some people may find an evening during the week convenient, while others have work, family, school, or professional commitments that make weekday participation difficult. A Sunday afternoon may provide greater flexibility for some people, while others may prefer to reserve their weekends for other activities.
There is no universally correct answer, which is precisely why community feedback matters. Histories & Memories exists to bring people together, so the schedule should reflect when the people who want to participate are reasonably able to do so.
As we plan the next gathering, we will use that feedback to help determine the day and time that provides the greatest opportunity for meaningful community participation.
What You Can Expect at Future Gatherings
Future Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories gatherings will continue to emphasize conversation, learning, community, and connection while allowing each gathering to develop its own character.
Depending upon the particular event, there may be historical photographs, discussion topics, questions about Franklin Lakes, local stories, invited community participants, or other materials that help begin conversations. At the same time, we want the program to remain flexible enough for unexpected discussions to develop naturally because some of the most interesting stories are often the ones nobody planned to discuss before the gathering began.
The objective is not to rush participants through a rigid agenda. We want to create an environment where people are comfortable asking questions, contributing memories, learning something new, and continuing a conversation when an interesting topic emerges.

Histories & Memories Is a Community Program
Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories is a community initiative, which means you do not need to own a business, represent a company, or be a member of The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce simply to appreciate the history and memories of Franklin Lakes.
Chamber members are certainly encouraged to participate, but Histories & Memories is intended to create opportunities for residents and others with meaningful connections to Franklin Lakes to become involved as well.
That distinction is important because our philosophy begins with community. Membership and business relationships have an important place within the Chamber, but this program begins with something everyone in the room can share: an interest in Franklin Lakes.
People interested in becoming more involved with the Chamber itself can learn more through Why Join Our Chamber, but joining the Chamber is not a requirement for participating in the Histories & Memories experience.
History Can Create New Relationships
Sharing memories has an interesting way of bringing people together because a common place, photograph, name, event, or experience can create an immediate connection between people who may never previously have met.
Two attendees may discover that they remember the same business. Someone may realize another participant knew a family member, teacher, neighbor, local business owner, or community leader they remember. A photograph may lead several people into a conversation that continues well beyond the original question that brought them together.
Those are genuine relationships created around shared experiences and curiosity, which fits naturally with the philosophy of The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce.
Our Grow & Connect Networking Breakfast approaches relationship building through professional and community networking, while Histories & Memories approaches connection from a completely different direction. The common principle is that meaningful relationships develop when people have something genuine to discuss and take the time to learn about one another.
Preserving Stories Before They Disappear
There is also a practical reason to encourage conversations about local history because memories can disappear surprisingly quickly.
People move away, businesses close, buildings change, photographs are misplaced, neighborhoods develop, and generations pass. Stories that once seemed commonly known can gradually become difficult to recover when the people who remember them no longer have an opportunity to share them.
Not every memory can or should be treated as a formally verified historical record, and personal recollections may sometimes differ. Histories & Memories is not intended to replace archival research, official historical documentation, or the work of professional and community historians. Instead, it creates an opportunity for stories to be shared while people still remember them and for questions to emerge that may encourage further research and discovery.
Sometimes preserving a piece of local history begins with something as simple as asking another person what they remember and then taking the time to listen to the answer.

Franklin Lakes Histories & Memories is not intended to be a one time event, and this page will not remain static.

Over time, the page itself can become part of the continuing story of the program.
Each gathering also creates an opportunity for something new to surface. Someone attending the next gathering may know something nobody at the first gathering knew.
